Beyond casinos: Roger Thomas for SICIS

When you hold a major in art history and are studio-trained in painting, sculpture, textiles, metalsmithing, and ceramics, there are virtually no limits to the applications of your knoweldge. World-renowned interior designer Roger Thomas, in fact, never seemed to bother with limits, not when it comes to his exuberant creativity, which he generously shared with the London public during two events hosted by SICIS, on 14 and 15 September 2016.

Roger Thomas’ career is deeply rooted in the Las Vegas scene. Since 1980, he has been joining forces with the US gambling magnate Steve Wynn – owner of the luxury resorts chain Wynn Resorts – designing the interiors for some of the world’s most spectacular hotels and casinos. Their projects include the likes of Las Vegas’ Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn and Encore, as well as Macao’s Encore and Wynn Palace Cotai. While each work is innovative and unique, Thomas’ signature style always shines through: colourful, joyful, extremely refined, but never predictable.

A recurrent element is the use of SICIS mosaics, which adorn floors, walls, swimming pools, furniture, and any other conceivable surface. It was love at first sight between Thomas and SICIS: since the designer discovered the incredible world of artistic mosaics, he incorporated them in every project, making ambiences come alive in the most dynamic and unexpected ways. A collaboration that quickly turned into an affectionate friendship, and led to SICIS asking Roger Thomas to design several fine jewellery and watches collections, using the ancient techniques of micro- and nanomosaics.

On 14 and 15 September, SICIS invited Roger Thomas as a guest speaker for two exclusive events. The first one focused on jewellery and took place at SICIS Mayfair showroom, while the second one, about the use of mosaics in interior design, was hosted at the Ritz, a bastion of British elegance and tradition. Thomas shared his experience with a selected audience of London-based jewellery experts and interior designers, disclosing his inspirations and a few behind-the-scenes anecdotes.
